At their September 2013 event, Apple announced the much-rumoured iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C.

Together, these models replace the iPhone 5, with the iPhone 5S becoming the flagship iPhone in terms of processor, performance etc and the iPhone 5C is a slightly cheaper, less-specced alternative.

iPhone 5S

The iPhone 5S boasts the following performance specs, including the first 64-bit processor seen in a smartphone.

  • 64-bit A7 processor
  • M7 motion co-processor
  • Fingerprint identity sensor
  • 4-inch Retina display
  • Colour options: Space Gray / Gold / Silver
  • 16GB/32GB/64GB models
  • Ships with iOS 7
  • Comes with the usual Apps plus also iPhoto, iMovies, iWork (Pages, Keynote, and Numbers)
  • Full tech specs and images at http://www.apple.com/iphone-5s/specs/

iPhone 5C

The look and colour choices of the iPhone 5C brings to mind the Nokia Lumia, so perhaps Apple is trying to gather a new market just from the look and feel.

The iPhone 5C tech specs:

  • A6 processor (as in iPhone 5)
  • 4-inch Retina display
  • Colour options: White / Pink / Blue / Yellow / Green
  • 16GB/32GB models
  • Ships with iOS 7
  • Comes with the usual Apps plus also iPhoto, iMovies, iWork (Pages, Keynote, and Numbers)

iPhone Range

These changes now seem to leave the iPhone Range as follows:

  • Flagship – iPhone 5S
  • Colourful alternative – iPhone 5C
  • Budget option – iPhone 4S

iOS 7

iOS 7 will be available from 18 September, for free download.
