The first ever event at the Steve Jobs Theatre was Apple’s big set of announcements for the latest iPhones and other Apple gear.

The main items were, as usual, saved until the end of the event, with the event starting off with info on Apple Stores (renamed to ‘Town Squares’ – is that for real?) and some info on new locations for them, at this point I assume most people watching the stream went off to get a cup of tea or coffee.

Eventually, they got around to the main event, which was the new batch of iPhones:

  • iPhone 8 – 4.7″ From $699
  • iPhone 8 Plus – 5.5″ From $799
  • And the leaked iPhone X – 5.8″ From $999 (see the image above)

iPhone X stats:

  • Screen = 5.8″ OLED HDR Super Retina display 2436×1125 458 ppi 2.7m pixels
  • Edge to edge display – with, in my opinion, an ugly notch at the top which houses the Face ID cameras and sensors – this spoils the overall effect of the display (somewhat like a similar notch did on the original Moto 360 smartwatch)
  • Glass back and front
  • Water and dust resistant
  • Available in Space grey and Silver
  • FaceID replaces Touch ID
  • No home button – swipe up instead (like on Samsung Galaxy S8)
  • The power button is now the Side button – and now takes on multiple functions (screenshots by pressing the Side button and the volume up button)
  • A11 Bionic processor

iPhone 8 & iPhone 8 Plus stats:

  • Same device sizes, screen sizes/res/ppi as iPhone 7 & iPhone 7 Plus
  • New = True Tone display, A11 Bionic chip and wireless charging

Also mentioned were:

  • iOS 11 – available from 19 September
  • Wireless charging with AirPower charging station using Qi technology/standards
  • Apple TV 4K HDR – the new version of the Apple TV box will now feature 4K HDR and the interface has been re-designed for 4K
  • WatchOS 4 – will be available from 19 September
  • Apple Watch Series 3 – which has Cellular / mobile phone tech built in
