For my third attempt at vibe coding, I again used Bolt which has proven a very good tool and is still letting me create these apps, on a free account.

This time, I decided to try and create something useful in my testing & QA work – a test data file generator.

I thought this might be a tricky choice but Bolt handled it fine.

Here’s my first, fairly simple prompt:

Let’s build an app for generating test data files which can be of different types such as PDF and Word and Excel. The user can set the size of the contents and whether it should contain text only or text and images.

The first attempt it produced was nice and simple and worked fine.

I then expanded on it by asking for the following change:

Could we add some further file type options so that we can generate data files like CSV, JSON and XML

And then another change was:

Can we add a new option to file size options where user can select the number of records/rows the data file should have?

And finally, I asked it to rename it:

Can I rename it to be ‘PatWalshTestDataGen’

All in all, even including the initial build and the changes I requested, it only took around 30 minutes – pretty amazing!

I then published it and the shared url for this tool is https://dynamic-test-data-fi-wwt7.bolt.host and feel free to use it.

I plan to amend it/add to it as further requirements come along.
